Your Initial Consultation
During your consultation at our Vein Clinic, you will meet with one of our vein specialists who will ask about your symptoms, medical history, as well as conduct a physical exam. You may be asked to stand while your legs are checked for swelling.
Ultrasound testing may be conducted to assess how well the veins in your legs are functioning, to look for the presence of blood clots, and to help "map" the blood vessels in your legs to help plan your treatment.

This treatment method essentially heats and shuts down varicose veins, forcing blood flow to automatically reroute to nearby healthy veins. During this minimally invasive procedure, a catheter is guided by ultrasound to the target vein, where radiofrequency waves produce an electrical current that causes scarring and closure of the vein. Within several weeks after the procedure, you should notice a reduction in the appearance of your varicose veins and any accompanying symptoms.
Sclerotherapy is considered cosmetic when it is used to treat spider veins, a purely cosmetic concern. During the procedure, an injection of special solution is made directly into the spider veins, which effectively closes the vein, so blood no longer collects or pools in those veins. Cosmetic sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for spider veins.
Sclerotherapy is also used to treat varicose veins, which are more than just a cosmetic concern. In these cases, injection of a chemical solution to shrink and shut down the problematic vein can effectively remove the varicose veins, reducing a patient's risk of blood clots and other complications of varicose veins. In addition to being a minimally invasive procedure, chemical sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard to treat varicose veins because it is effective, relatively easy, and painless.
In addition to radiofrequency ablation, laser treatment may also be used to shut down varicose veins. Sometimes called endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), laser beams are used to heat and destroy the targeted vein, causing it to scar, narrow, and close. Blood is automatically rerouted to nearby healthy veins, essentially eliminating your varicose veins and any accompanying symptoms.
Patients with May-Thurner syndrome (MTS), in which the iliac vein that travels down into the left leg is compressed, have an increased risk of developing a deep vein thrombosis in their left lower leg. If you have MTS, this procedure places a stent in the vein to help keep it open, reducing the risk of future blood clots developing due to the condition. Iliac vein stenting is typically performed as a more permanent solution after a blood clot is discovered and dissolved.
In the vast majority of cases, there are steps you can take on your own to help improve the circulation in your legs and reduce the symptoms associated with varicose veins. Compression stockings are the most often recommended. These stockings, when put on first thing in the morning, can help squeeze blood upward, toward the heart, and out of the legs.
